What are uterine fibroids?
Uterine fibroids are benign growths in the muscle tissue of the uterus. Also known as myomas, leiomyomas, and fibromas, they can vary in size and shape, and may be present inside the uterus, on the outer surface, or within the uterine wall. Fibroids can occur at any age, but they are most common in women in their thirties and forties. Symptoms often do not cause problems, though some women may experience symptoms that affect normal daily life.
Certain signs and symptoms may signal the need for treatment:
- Heavy or painful periods that affect normal activites
- Bleeding between periods
- Rapid increase in growth of the fibroid
- Pelvic pain
